RUMI & THE ROSE
By writer-director Hassen Rasool
An epic drama of love, lust, jealousy, joy and deception, set against the backdrop of 18th-century England.
Rumi hails from a distant land and is blessed with many skills and talents. When Lord Somerton invites him to England to help him resolve a serious dilemma, he is at first reluctant to accept. But on his arrival at Somerton’s estate in the English countryside, Rumi meets an archetypal English rose, sparking a story of injustice, patience and forgiveness.
In this whirlwind tale, the dervish Rumi's spiritual wisdom and poetic gifts transform the lives not just of Rose and Lord Somerton, but also of the whole community beyond the aristocratic household.
With atmospheric cinematography and a sweeping narrative, the film celebrates the English countryside, the beauty of language, and the intricacies of the human heart. The result is a delight for the soul and the senses alike, and a powerful deconstruction of racial divisions and stereotypical preconceptions.
The ultimate aim of the film is to educate and unite communities from all walks of life.
